An in vitro study was made in order to determine the effect of dowel preparation on the apical seal in short roots. Eight groups of samples were prepared. Group 1: canals without obturation (positive control). Group 2: canals obturated with guttapercha an sealer without partial removal of obturation (negative control) Group 3 and 4: canals completely occupied by metalic dowels cemented with zinc phosphate cement, without previous apical obturation. In Group 3 cementation was direct. In Group 4 a portion of Grossman's sealer was previously put at the end of the dowel. In groups 5, 6, 7 and 8, apical obturations were made with guttapercha and sealer with a presumed length of 1, 2, 3 and 4 mm., respectively. In these four groups, a metalic dowel was then cemented in the free space of each canal in order to imitate the clinic situation. The samples were put in colouring solution and leakage was measured afterwords with optical microscope with micrometric eyepiece. The final length of apical obturations *Groups 5 to 8 was also measured. The results were analysed statistically. It was found that the length obtained at the apical obturations was different from the one pretended in every group. In group 3 (dowel without sealer), the leakage was significantly greater than in all the other groups. In group 4 (dowel with sealer), the leakage found did not show a difference estatistically significant, compared with the control group. In group 5, 6 and 7 (apical obturations of 1, 2 and 3mm.) the difference was not significant either, compared with the control group. In group 8 (apical obturation of 4mm.), there was not any leakage at all. Complementary, clinic procedures are proposed for restauration problems in short roots.
