The purpose of the present work was to compare, in curved canals instrumentated with manual and mechanical techniques, the degree of rectification of curvatures, apical transportation, dentine removed area and canal axis movement. Besides, radiographic versus anatomic method for apical transportation were compared, the residual canal thickness and amounts of debris apically extruded in root canals were quantified. Sixty mandibular molars, with curved root canals ranging 15 to 45 were selected. The teeth were inclosed in transparent resin in a grilon key-like muffle using Bramantes procedure. The roots were horizontally sectioned in three levels and pre and post instrumentation photographs were taken. The preoperative thinnest mesially and distally root canals were measured and recorded. The sections were reasembled in the muffle and the canals were instrumented using: 1- Manual instrumentation with Mor-flex files, 2- Mechanical instrumentation with Cursor (WH) and Mor-flex files, 3- Manual instrumentation with Flexi-cut files and 4- Mechanical instrumentation with Cursor (WH) and Flexi-cut fijes. Pre and post operativo radiographs were proyected, traced and pre and post canal curvatura were measured. These two tracing were overlaid and the transportations measured. After having been instrumentated, the segments were removed again, and the post operativo thinnest root measured. Transportation anatomic measurement was made analizing pre and pos instrumentation photographs, using an Image 1.45 Sofware Macintosh computer. The data were analyzed statistically with ANOVA. There were no significant differences between the groups, comparing the curvature changes produced by all techniques. With regards to apical transportation, in mesiodistally, there were no significant differences among the groups, but buccolingually there were significant differences between Group 1 and Group 3. There were no significant differences in canal center movement among the groups. Radiographic and anatomic methods showed significant difference. With regards to the dentin removed area there were differences between manual and mechanical techniques only at apical level. There were significant differences in the residual thickness comparing manual or mechanical techniques, with the thinnest proportion risk thickness in manual techniques. While there were no differences in the residual thickness between Mor-flex file and Flexi-cut file. For the study of debris apically extruded, forty single rooted mature, with only one foramen and apical foramen permeability teeth were selected. The groups were conformes as in the former study. Debris extruded through the apical foramen was quantified using the Myers and Montgomery technique. The Test ANOVA showed no significant difference between the instrument and instrumentation techniques.
