Summary: The feasible number of implants to be surgically placed in an edentulous patient is determined by the amount and quality of available bone tissue. A fixed dental prosthesis can be made when six to eight implants are placed. When no more than four implants can be put, the use of an overdenture will be the right option. If four or more implants are placed then, the use of a fixed-detachable prosthesis will be recommended. This type of overdenture that is completely supported by implants allows the correction of mal positions in the implants as well as the perfect adaptation of the prosthesis to the gingival tissue. Besides, the flanges provide labial support making the design of overdimensioned teeth unnecessary. It is important to mention that the problems caused by air escaping under the prosthesis during speech are avoided since no spaces are left between the teeth and the gingival tissue. Another advantage to be considered is the simplification of oral hygiene procedures. The biggest disadvantage these restorations have is the difficulty in activating the locks that fix them based upon microengineering and metallographics studies theer different fixing systems have been designed and materialized. The manual activactor system was designed to unlock the prothesis by pressing two metal buttons. The semiautomatic system has an external control of organic lines that at the moment of activaction attract the locks electromagnetically allowing the patient to pull the overdenture out.The automatic system includes a magnetic mini actuator, an electronic device and a remote control. When the signal is produced electronically, the system is unlocked and lets the patient remove the prothesis easily.
